Kent's Liberal Democrat County Councillors have called on KCC to copy the coalition Government and involve the public in the difficult discussions about where cuts should be made in the County Council's budget.
Trudy Dean, Lib Dem Leader of the Opposition, said:
"KCC has been told it must cut £15.5 million this in financial year, and there is probably more to come in future. Before the County decides where the axe will fall, we must ask the public which services should be protected, which are regarded as less important, and what is judged to be a waste of money. Public views can then be taken into account right at the start. The Government have pledged to do it, so why not Kent County Council?"
Trudy pointed out that KCCs decision this week to consult on selling off old people's homes came as a bolt from the blue, saying:
"We need much more transparency about what choices are open to us instead of rushing headlong into unpopular proposals."
