You asked for it........and the Lib Dems have done it!

Tony Harwood and waste

As promised, the Lib Dems on Maidstone Borough Council have reversed Tory plans. A weekly rubbish collection is retained AND recycling is dramatically increased. The decision made by the Maidstone Tories last Spring to slash the rubbish collection to a fortnightly service outraged the public. The local press and Lib Dem postbags were inundated with letters of protest.

When we replaced the Tory led Council we promised to fight to retain weekly collections of waste and improve recycling. At the full Council meeting on 26th September the Tory plans were binned! Against strong opposition from the Tories, the funding package put forward by the Lib Dems was agreed. The new scheme will be phased in from February 2008. The new plan secures weekly collections of waste and at the same time dramatically increases recycling.
