Kent Fire and Rescue warn on clip-on spotlights

10.26.05am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 1st Oct 2009

Kent Fire and Rescue Service is warning that clip-on spotlights should be used with care after a blaze in a child's bedroom in Tunbridge Wells. The fire happened at St Michael's Road shortly after 2am on 30th September, but fortunately the child woke up and a male adult dealt with the fire, putting the mattress in the garden. However, the fire hadn't been completely extinguished and firefighters were called at 6.30am to deal with it.

Tunbridge Wells Watch Manager Bob Gardner says the incident highlights some very important safety issues:

"It appears the spotlight had slipped down and the hot bulb set light to the bedding. The family didn't have any working smoke alarms so they're extremely lucky the child woke up and raised the alarm.

"It also shows that if you're going to use a clip-on spotlight that you must make sure it's away from things like bedding and curtains, and ensure it is securely fixed. The child's mother was extremely shocked by it and we just want to warn others that they might not be as lucky."
